Opening Hymns:
When Morning Guilds the Skies (Red Hymnal 186)

Scripture Reading:
John 2:18-22

Message: Beyond Cultural Norms
Sometimes we can get mixed up too much with wanting to see miraculous signs. We want to see proof of God’s hand in our lives, or proof of Jesus’ sacrifice and love. Jesus responds by telling them of the most miraculous sign of all. Jesus will die for our sins, and come back to life three days later. The Jews that are questioning him don’t get it.

Likewise, sometimes we can miss out on all the miraculous signs around us. We may be too focused on what we want to see, and miss out on the beautiful things that God has given us. Our own social norms and cultures can sometimes cloud our vision so that we don’t see God’s plan fully.

In this scripture reading the Jews that confronted Jesus were unable to grasp what he was saying because it didn’t match up well with their cultural practices. Their minds were most likely focused on their beloved temple, and how could he talk about it being destroyed and raised in three days. They were not on the same page with Jesus.

When we feel like we aren’t on the same page with God, or when we feel lost we can always pray for discernment. God is not trying to trick or confuse us, but rather, He is trying to guide us and teach us His ways. Through study of His Word and through prayer we can more readily see His path in our life. Each society has its own lepers that the culture is to avoid. God challenges us to show love to the outcasts and to touch the untouchable. With His guidance we will understand how.

Time of Prayer
Dear Lord, thank You for Your guidance in our lives. Help us to follow You all the days of our lives. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Closing Hymn
Tell Me The Stories of Jesus (Red Hymnal 277)

May the Lord bless you and keep you: May the Lord make His face shine upon you, and be gracious unto you: May the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace." Amen.

Go in peace, serve the Lord
Thanks be to God
