The Loving Light

March 30, 2014

Opening Hymns:
539 O Spirit of the Living God
http://www.hymnsite.com/lyrics/umh539.sht

Scripture Reading:
Ephesians 5:8-14

5:8 For once you were darkness, but now in the Lord you are light. Live as children of light-

5:9 for the fruit of the light is found in all that is good and right and true.

5:10 Try to find out what is pleasing to the Lord.

5:11 Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.

5:12 For it is shameful even to mention what such people do secretly;

5:13 but everything exposed by the light becomes visible,

5:14 for everything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, "Sleeper, awake! Rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you."

Message:

Though fear and shame may lead people to hide and cover up sin, the best thing to help heal sin is light, not darkness.

Those who have drug addictions, or surround themselves with other types of sin in darkness, cannot reach full healing until light enters in. That is when other people can come and help give support. Only until the sin or problem is known can people give the needed aide so that healing and recovering can begin. Sometimes it is impossible to recover from things on your own, but when you bring your challenges to the light, others will come and share your burden with you. They will help you through all your trials.

At times we can keep other things hidden besides sins. We can keep our burdens to ourselves, not wanting to trouble others. But if we make our fears, concerns, and burdens known, others can give a loving support and help us through each challenge.

In the same way we need people to be a light for us, we need to be a light for others. It can be hard to share one another’s burdens, and it can be harder still to confront friends or family with concerns about behaviors, addictions, or sins. But if we talk to them with love and support, we can allow the light to enter in, and the healing can then begin.

Time of Prayer
Dear Lord, when we are in darkness send someone to show us the light. When we see others in darkness, let us be a light for them. Amen

Every Day of the Week, God Loves Us

March 29, 2014
Opening Hymns:
139 Praise to the Lord the Almighty
http://www.hymnsite.com/lyrics/umh139.sht

Scripture Reading:
John 9:7-41
9:7 saying to him, "Go, wash in the pool of Siloam" (which means Sent). Then he went and washed and came back able to see.

9:8 The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar began to ask, "Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?"

9:9 Some were saying, "It is he." Others were saying, "No, but it is someone like him." He kept saying, "I am the man."

9:10 But they kept asking him, "Then how were your eyes opened?"

9:11 He answered, "The man called Jesus made mud, spread it on my eyes, and said to me, 'Go to Siloam and wash.' Then I went and washed and received my sight."

9:12 They said to him, "Where is he?" He said, "I do not know."

9:13 They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind.

9:14 Now it was a sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes.

9:15 Then the Pharisees also began to ask him how he had received his sight. He said to them, "He put mud on my eyes. Then I washed, and now I see."

9:16 Some of the Pharisees said, "This man is not from God, for he does not observe the sabbath." But others said, "How can a man who is a sinner perform such signs?" And they were divided.

9:17 So they said again to the blind man, "What do you say about him? It was your eyes he opened." He said, "He is a prophet."

9:18 The Jews did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight

9:19 and asked them, "Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?"

9:20 His parents answered, "We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind;

9:21 but we do not know how it is that now he sees, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself."

9:22 His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that anyone who confessed Jesus to be the Messiah would be put out of the synagogue.

9:23 Therefore his parents said, "He is of age; ask him."

9:24 So for the second time they called the man who had been blind, and they said to him, "Give glory to God! We know that this man is a sinner."

9:25 He answered, "I do not know whether he is a sinner. One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see."

9:26 They said to him, "What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?"

9:27 He answered them, "I have told you already, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?"

9:28 Then they reviled him, saying, "You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.

9:29 We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from."

9:30 The man answered, "Here is an astonishing thing! You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes.

9:31 We know that God does not listen to sinners, but he does listen to one who worships him and obeys his will.

9:32 Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind.

9:33 If this man were not from God, he could do nothing."

9:34 They answered him, "You were born entirely in sins, and are you trying to teach us?" And they drove him out.

9:35 Jesus heard that they had driven him out, and when he found him, he said, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?"

9:36 He answered, "And who is he, sir? Tell me, so that I may believe in him."

9:37 Jesus said to him, "You have seen him, and the one speaking with you is he."

9:38 He said, "Lord, I believe." And he worshiped him.

9:39 Jesus said, "I came into this world for judgment so that those who do not see may see, and those who do see may become blind."

9:40 Some of the Pharisees near him heard this and said to him, "Surely we are not blind, are we?"

9:41 Jesus said to them, "If you were blind, you would not have sin. But now that you say, 'We see,' your sin remains.

Message:
Even when Jesus is giving sight to the blind, the Pharisees question and criticize. How can a work so miraculous and good cause arguments and judgment? The primary debate was around the fact that Jesus was healing people on the Sabbath. However, in making so many rules around the day of rest… the Sabbath could become more stressful than restful. Jesus reminds us that “the Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath” (Mark 2:27).

I am so grateful that Jesus taught us such a loving and healing gift can be used even on the Sabbath. As a nurse, there are many Sundays that I’ve had to work. I’ve often had to miss church as well. Jesus’ teaching reminds us that we don’t have to take a day from showing kindness to others. Loving people around us doesn’t have to stop on the Sabbath. We can share God’s love and healing any day of the week.

Time of Prayer
Dear Lord, thank you for being with us every day of the week. Help us to remember to share Your love with others. Amen

Challenges to Strengthen

March 28, 2014

Opening Hymns:
368 My Hope is Built
http://www.hymnsite.com/lyrics/umh368.sht

Scripture Reading:
John 9:1-9

9:1 As he walked along, he saw a man blind from birth.

9:2 His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?"

9:3 Jesus answered, "Neither this man nor his parents sinned; he was born blind so that God's works might be revealed in him.

9:4 We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming when no one can work.

9:5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world."

9:6 When he had said this, he spat on the ground and made mud with the saliva and spread the mud on the man's eyes,

Message:
In the Old Testament we saw many people thinking that bad things happen to people because the person had sinned. One of the lessons in Job is that bad things can happen to righteous people. We learn this once more when the disciples ask Jesus why people are born blind. Jesus’ response “…He was born blind so that God’s works might be revealed in him.”

So perhaps when life is not going our way, or when bad things happen in our life it isn’t because of sin, or a punishment from God. It might just be the challenge that will make us stronger for the next part of the journey. We may not how these challenges will add to God’s plan, but we must trust in the Lord to get us through every trial we are facing.

Time of Prayer
Dear Lord, thank you for Your unfailing love. You have been with us from the beginning, and are with us each step of the way. Help us grow and learn from challenges in our lives so that glorify Your name. Amen.

Light

March 27, 2014
Opening Hymns:
440 Let There Be Light
http://www.hymnsite.com/lyrics/umh440.sht

Scripture Reading:
Ephesians 5:8-14

5:8 For once you were darkness, but now in the Lord you are light. Live as children of light-

5:9 for the fruit of the light is found in all that is good and right and true.

5:10 Try to find out what is pleasing to the Lord.

5:13 but everything exposed by the light becomes visible,

5:14 for everything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, "Sleeper, awake! Rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you."

Message:
We should live our lives openly. As a child I remember believing this with all my heart. I recall pondering “if we all know what is good and bad, why would anyone do things that are bad or sinful?” Sometimes I wish that life was as easy as that. Back then it seemed so simple, everything was either good or bad, black or white.

However, this bible verse gives us a good path to follow. Even though “right and wrong” or “good and bad” aren’t as clearly defined as children may believe, we have ways to tell what is best to do, or best left undone. Is what we do something that would please the Lord? Are our actions something we could talk to others about, or are they things we feel ashamed of and want to keep hidden?  When we really look at our lives how can we let more light in? How can we shape our behavior so that it would be pleasing to God?

Time of Prayer
Dear Lord, please forgive us when we sin. Let Your light enter in so that there is no more room for darkness. Amen

Shepherd

March 24, 2014

Opening Hymns:
381 Savior Like a Shepherd Lead Us
http://www.hymnsite.com/lyrics/umh381.sht

Scripture Reading:
Psalm 23
23:1 The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want.

23:2 He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters;

23:3 he restores my soul. He leads me in right paths for his name's sake.

23:4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff-- they comfort me.

23:5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

23:6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD my whole life long.

Message:
I remember this psalm very well. It is the first one I ever memorized. In 5th grade we had the chance to win a small prize if we memorized different bible verses. This psalm is probably one of the most popular psalms to memorize, and it is clear to see why. It is a simple psalm, but it gives a beautiful picture of what our relationship with God is like. He is the shepherd that guides us, He is with us during all our trials. When our life has ended we get to be with Him forever.

I recall reciting this psalm to myself in prayer when I’ve needed comfort. The beautiful picture it conveys is calming. It reminds us that God is forever with us to call us back to the fold. He is protecting us from evil, and providing us with everything we need. This is the kind of walk I want to have with God, ever following Him, and ever trusting Him.

Time of Prayer
Dear Lord, lead us like a shepherd. Protect us from things that would harm, and guide us to things that strengthen us on this day. Amen

Look at the Heart

March 23, 2014
Opening Hymns:
420 Breathe on me Breath of God
http://www.hymnsite.com/lyrics/umh420.sht

Scripture Reading:
1 Samuel 16:1-13

16:1 The LORD said to Samuel, "How long will you grieve over Saul? I have rejected him from being king over Israel. Fill your horn with oil and set out; I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons."

16:2 Samuel said, "How can I go? If Saul hears of it, he will kill me." And the LORD said, "Take a heifer with you, and say, 'I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.'

16:3 Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; and you shall anoint for me the one whom I name to you."

16:4 Samuel did what the LORD commanded, and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling, and said, "Do you come peaceably?"

16:5 He said, "Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the LORD; sanctify yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice." And he sanctified Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.

16:6 When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, "Surely the Lord's anointed is now before the LORD."

16:7 But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for the LORD does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart."

16:8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. He said, "Neither has the LORD chosen this one."

16:9 Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, "Neither has the LORD chosen this one."

16:10 Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel, and Samuel said to Jesse, "The LORD has not chosen any of these."

16:11 Samuel said to Jesse, "Are all your sons here?" And he said, "There remains yet the youngest, but he is keeping the sheep." And Samuel said to Jesse, "Send and bring him; for we will not sit down until he comes here."

16:12 He sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and had beautiful eyes, and was handsome. The LORD said, "Rise and anoint him; for this is the one."

16:13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the presence of his brothers; and the spirit of the LORD came mightily upon David from that day forward. Samuel then set out and went to Ramah.

Message:
At this point in the scriptures it shouldn’t be any surprise that God sees beyond what we see. He looks within the heart and not at the exterior, and he doesn’t follow societies’ laws. David didn’t look like he fit the part, and he was the youngest son and should therefore have had the least amount of right to such an anointing. However, God saw in him a leader. David would go on to slay Goliath, and would become a king. David had a heart that was willing to follow God, and do His will.

What has God called you to do in your life? Have you opened your heart and listened to His call, or have you questioned His trust in you? It’s not hard to look at challenges in life, and to say, “Surly there is someone better for this task, Lord!” However, if God is calling you, there is a reason. If we trust the Lord, and strive to do His will, we can see the beauty of His plan as it unfolds.

Time of Prayer
Dear Lord, thank You for looking at our hearts, and not at the exterior things that mankind focuses on. Guide us that we may see what You see. Give us strength and courage to trust you, and lead us through the challenges of this day. Amen.

God is in Control

March 21, 2014

Opening Hymns:
127 Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah
http://www.hymnsite.com/lyrics/umh127.sht

Scripture Reading:
Exodus 17:1-7

17:1 From the wilderness of Sin the whole congregation of the Israelites journeyed by stages, as the LORD commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink.

17:2 The people quarreled with Moses, and said, "Give us water to drink." Moses said to them, "Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the LORD?"

17:3 But the people thirsted there for water; and the people complained against Moses and said, "Why did you bring us out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and livestock with thirst?"

17:4 So Moses cried out to the LORD, "What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me."

17:5 The LORD said to Moses, "Go on ahead of the people, and take some of the elders of Israel with you; take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go.

17:6 I will be standing there in front of you on the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it, so that the people may drink." Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel.

17:7 He called the place Massah and Meribah, because the Israelites quarreled and tested the LORD, saying, "Is the LORD among us or not?"

Message:
Why do I doubt the Lord? It seems that regardless of what amazing things the Lord has done for me in the past, I still doubt His plan for the future. The Lord can make water come forth from rocks, He created Heaven and earth, and yet we can worry about finances, jobs, and grades. Doesn’t it bring comfort to know that He is in control? I wonder how the Israelites would have felt had they thought about the miracles the Lord did before they ended up in the desert. Perhaps they would have asked for, and not demanded, water. Maybe they would have realized that the Lord was already with them, and would meet their every need.
I’ve often wondered why God’s Chosen people were the way they were. As I reflect tonight I am reminded of how external influences have a big impact on me. Perhaps the Egyptians had an influence on the Israelites behavior. Living in Egypt was all that generation had known. The Egyptians worshiped different gods, and held many different beliefs. When you’re living in a different land it is hard not to conform at least a little. Perhaps that’s the problem that I have as well. Our society can lead us to feel like we don’t have enough, don’t look pretty enough, or aren’t smart enough. It is important to grow and learn; however, it is also important to know that God loves you just the way you are. So instead of worrying, talk to God about your fears, and rest in His comfort.

Time of Prayer
Dear Lord, thank You for being there for each of us. Help us through all the challenges that life has to offer. Give us comfort in knowing that You hold the world in Your hands. Amen.

Joy to Share

March 20, 2014
Opening Hymns:
103 Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise
http://www.hymnsite.com/lyrics/umh103.sht

Scripture Reading:
John 4:5-42

4:5 So he came to a Samaritan city called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.

4:6 Jacob's well was there, and Jesus, tired out by his journey, was sitting by the well. It was about noon.

4:7 A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, "Give me a drink."

4:8 (His disciples had gone to the city to buy food.)

4:9 The Samaritan woman said to him, "How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?" (Jews do not share things in common with Samaritans.)

4:10 Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water."

4:11 The woman said to him, "Sir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water?

4:12 Are you greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us the well, and with his sons and his flocks drank from it?"

4:13 Jesus said to her, "Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again,

4:14 but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life."

4:15 The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water, so that I may never be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water."

4:16 Jesus said to her, "Go, call your husband, and come back."

4:17 The woman answered him, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "You are right in saying, 'I have no husband';

4:18 for you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true!"

4:19 The woman said to him, "Sir, I see that you are a prophet.

4:20 Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem."

4:21 Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.

4:22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.

4:23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such as these to worship him.

4:24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth."

4:25 The woman said to him, "I know that Messiah is coming" (who is called Christ). "When he comes, he will proclaim all things to us."

4:26 Jesus said to her, "I am he, the one who is speaking to you."

4:27 Just then his disciples came. They were astonished that he was speaking with a woman, but no one said, "What do you want?" or, "Why are you speaking with her?"

4:28 Then the woman left her water jar and went back to the city. She said to the people,

4:29 "Come and see a man who told me everything I have ever done! He cannot be the Messiah, can he?"

4:30 They left the city and were on their way to him.

4:31 Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, "Rabbi, eat something."

4:32 But he said to them, "I have food to eat that you do not know about."

4:33 So the disciples said to one another, "Surely no one has brought him something to eat?"

4:34 Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to complete his work.

4:35 Do you not say, 'Four months more, then comes the harvest'? But I tell you, look around you, and see how the fields are ripe for harvesting.

4:36 The reaper is already receiving wages and is gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together.

4:37 For here the saying holds true, 'One sows and another reaps.'

4:38 I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor."

4:39 Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman's testimony, "He told me everything I have ever done."

4:40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days.

4:41 And many more believed because of his word.

4:42 They said to the woman, "It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the Savior of the world."

Message:
Have you ever gotten so excited that you just had to share it with someone else. Picture a time when you were filled with joy and happiness. You needed to run to the phone, or post something on facebook! You just couldn’t keep it to yourself. Multiply that feeling times a thousand and we may come close to how the Samaritan women felt. She has just realized that she was speaking to the Messiah. She goes and tells others in the village, and they are able to see for themselves and be amazed.

I wonder what happened in that town after Jesus left. I can only imagine that they continued to spread and share the news that the Messiah had come. Perhaps they shared with amazement that He would speak to them even though they weren’t even Jews. As I reflect on the scripture my heart warms when I think how inclusive Jesus was. That message was clear to the Samaritans, because in the last verse they call Jesus the “Savior of the world”. Jesus did not only come to save one people, but all people. His love and forgiveness for all mankind is a beautiful and joyous message that is hard not to share.

Time of Prayer
Dear Lord, thank you so much for the love and joy that you have given to all of us. Thank you for coming to save us all. Forgive us our sins on this day, and give us the strength to serve and do Your will, while we share Your beautiful message with others. Amen.

I am grateful to God—whom I worship with a clear conscience, as my ancestors did—when I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day. Recalling your tears, I long to see you so that I may be filled with joy. I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, lives in you. For this reason I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands; for God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline.

Message:
I went to the Lenten service at my church this evening. As I was sitting waiting for the service to start I read the scripture above that had been chosen for the service. I had only gone to that church for 4 services all together, and had been asked to lead the songs with the pastor’s son. I was so nervous. Reading that last verse gave me confidence, and helped ease my mind. We each of us have gifts to share with others, and God did not want us to be afraid to use them. As I left the service I was so happy that I was able to be a part of it, and share my gift of singing.

Are there gifts that you are holding back because of fear? Let this scripture give you comfort and confidence! The theme at my church for lent is “pass it on”. Think of how your gifts can show others the love of God. Perhaps being brave enough might encourage others. Who was there to pass on the love of God to you? How might you do the same for someone else?

Time of Prayer
Dear Lord, thank you so much for the person who taught me that You love us. Help me to spread that love in what I say, and do. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Closing Hymn
It only takes a spark to get a fire going,
And soon all those around can warm up in its glowing;
That's how it is with God's Love,
Once you've experienced it,
Your spread the love to everyone
You want to pass it on.

What a wondrous time is spring,
When all the tress are budding
The birds begin to sing, the flowers start their blooming;
That's how it is with God's love,
Once you've experienced it.
You want to sing, it's fresh like spring,
You want to pass it on.

I wish for you my friend
This happiness that I've found;
You can depend on God
It matters not where you're bound,
I'll shout it from the mountain top
I want the world to know
The Lord of love has come to me
I want to pass it on.

I'll shout it from the mountain top
I want the world to know
The Lord of love has come to me
I want to pass it on.

May the Lord bless you and keep you: May the Lord make His face shine upon you, and be gracious unto you: May the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace." Amen.

Endurance

March 18, 2014

Opening Hymns:
509 Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me
http://www.hymnsite.com/lyrics/umh509.sht

Scripture Reading:
Romans 5:1-11
5:1 Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

5:2 through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God.

5:3 And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance,

5:4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope,

5:5 and hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.

5:6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.

5:7 Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person--though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to die.

5:8 But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us.

5:9 Much more surely then, now that we have been justified by his blood, will we be saved through him from the wrath of God.

5:10 For if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more surely, having been reconciled, will we be saved by his life.

5:11 But more than that, we even boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

Message:
How many times have you boasted about your sufferings? Looking back I can’t picture myself boasting or bragging about something I was suffering through. This scripture, however, gives us a different way to look at it. Suffering can help us grow in faith, and it can strengthen our hope. Perhaps we need to get through a particular storm in our lives in order to face an even bigger storm. Even challenges and struggles can have a very positive effect on our lives.

In the midst of some life storms, this scripture can add comfort. We can remember to rely on God to give us strength. We can rest our hope and our trust in Him. During our challenges we can feel His strength getting us through, and we can also feel the challenge strengthening us. When life is hard, never forget that God is with us each step of the day.

Time of Prayer
Dear Lord, thank you for helping us grow stronger through the challenges in our lives. Be with us as we face challenges of each day. Help us learn from our challenges and let us become even closer to you. Amen

Faith in the Desert

March 17, 2014

Opening Hymns:
407 Close to Thee
http://www.hymnsite.com/lyrics/umh407.sht

Message:
As I read the scripture for today a feeling of guilt washes over me. I have questioned God’s plan just like the Israelites. I have felt abandoned, and I’ve gotten upset at where my life has led me. However, I wasn’t even wandering through a desert dying of thirst. As I read through this scripture I find it impossible to judge the Israelites for questioning God; instead, I find it easy to see myself doing the exact same thing. At the end of the story we see God come through once more as He always does. He gives them water, and their faith is renewed.

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could trust God through all of our challenges? What would life be like if we praised the Lord even before getting the “water”? Trust is something that is so much easier when life is going well. However, trust is needed most during the chaotic moments in life. We see in the bible time and time again that God listens to His children. When I look back at the harder times in my life, when I’ve trusted God I’ve gotten through them stronger than ever. My challenge for you, praise God in the midst of the deserts of life, remembering His unfailing love.

Time of Prayer
Dear Lord, thank you for providing for us. Thank you for giving us strength for all of our storms, and thank you for leading us through each challenge in life. Amen.

Change

March 16, 2014

Opening Hymns:
368 My Hope is Built
http://www.hymnsite.com/lyrics/umh368.sht

Scripture Reading:
17:1 Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves.

17:2 And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white.

17:3 Suddenly there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him.

17:4 Then Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three dwellings here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah."

17:5 While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, "This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!"

17:6 When the disciples heard this, they fell to the ground and were overcome by fear.

17:7 But Jesus came and touched them, saying, "Get up and do not be afraid."

17:8 And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone.

17:9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus ordered them, "Tell no one about the vision until after the Son of Man has been raised from the dead."

Message:
Sometimes I find myself trying to keep things just the way they are. I don’t like change, and historically have tried to avoid change at any cost. In this verse Peter is the one who doesn’t want things to change either. He is with Jesus, and sees Moses and Elijah appear. He wants to build dwellings. He doesn’t want this moment to end! Later on when Jesus foretells His Death and resurrection Peter states “God forbid it, Lord! This must never happen to you.’ But he turned and said to Peter, ‘Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; for you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.’” (Mathew 16:22-23). Peter didn’t want to lose Jesus, but in wanting him to stay on earth he was actually unintentionally trying to prevent the greatest victory over sin and death.

Sometimes it’s hard for me to accept that being stagnant can be a bad thing. There is no room to grow and develop into a closer follower of Christ. I find myself clinging to moments that I’ve shared with God in the past so hard that it can lessen the beauty of the here and now, and the adventure that it yet to come. Peter sees the glory of God, and does not want to let that moment slip away. But there is something more miraculous down the road that he can’t see. It is true for you and me as well. What things are you clinging on to? How can you let change enter in and transform your life? If you like me have a hard time with change this might give you peace. God loves you and forgives all your sins… and that will never change.

Time of Prayer
Dear Lord, thank you for all the beautiful changes that you have made in our lives. Let us continue to change and grow closer to You. Amen.

Sharing Love and Forgiveness

March 14, 2014

Opening Hymns:
348 Softly and Tenderly Jesus is Calling
http://www.hymnsite.com/lyrics/umh348.sht

Scripture Reading:
John 3:1-17
3:1 Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews.

3:2 He came to Jesus by night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God."

3:3 Jesus answered him, "Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above."

3:4 Nicodemus said to him, "How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother's womb and be born?"

3:5 Jesus answered, "Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit.

3:6 What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit.

3:7 Do not be astonished that I said to you, 'You must be born from above.'

3:8 The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit."

3:9 Nicodemus said to him, "How can these things be?"

3:10 Jesus answered him, "Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things?

3:11 "Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony.

3:12 If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things?

3:13 No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man.

3:14 And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up,

3:15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

3:16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.

3:17 "Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

Message:

This is one of my favorite scriptures, because it shows in full the hope that Jesus Christ brings to us through His love and His sacrifice. The last verse of today’s scripture reads “Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him”; however, it is amazing to me how we as Christians can sometimes make non-Christians feel condemned. Even as we look on from each denomination we can see fellow Christians teaching about how their religion holds the only truth, and all others are condemned.

How can we, as followers of Christ, bring these words of hope to those who need to hear? How can we teach people about God’s love in a way that they feel forgiven and accepted? When I ponder these questions, the answer that comes back is always, “love them as God has loved you”. Showing love, kindness and forgiveness to others is a wonderful start in sharing God’s love.

Time of Prayer

Dear Lord, You hold all the answers, and You have all the truth. Forgive us when we judge others here on earth. Give us hearts for forgiving. Give us the strength to show Your love to everyone we meet. Please forgive us our sins, and help us forgive the sins of others. Amen.

Precious Gifts

March 13, 2014

Opening Hymns:
417 O For a Heart to Praise My God
http://www.hymnsite.com/lyrics/umh417.sht

Scripture Reading:
Romans 4:1-5, 13-17
4:1 What then are we to say was gained by Abraham, our ancestor according to the flesh?

4:2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God.

4:3 For what does the scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness."

4:4 Now to one who works, wages are not reckoned as a gift but as something due.

4:5 But to one who without works trusts him who justifies the ungodly, such faith is reckoned as righteousness.

4:13 For the promise that he would inherit the world did not come to Abraham or to his descendants through the law but through the righteousness of faith.

4:14 If it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void.

4:15 For the law brings wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there violation.

4:16 For this reason it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his descendants, not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham (for he is the father of all of us,

4:17 as it is written, "I have made you the father of many nations") -- in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist.

Message:
There are some things that we can’t earn, and some things that we can’t buy. The song “Can’t Buy Me Love” by Paul McCartney comes to mind. How empty would love feel if it wasn’t a gift? The meaning seems to melt away if love is something to be bought, or earned like a wage. It being a gift is what makes it so precious.

It is also true for the gift of life that Jesus gives us. If we could somehow earn our way into heaven or earn God’s love it wouldn’t feel as beautiful and precious as the gift that we’ve been given. We all indeed have sinned, and because of our sin God could punish us accordingly. However, He has given us the gift of love, and the gift of forgiveness. Finally, He has given us the most beautiful thing of all, the chance to be close to Him for all time.

Time of Prayer
Dear Lord, thank You for all the precious gifts that You have given us. Let us share this gift of love with those we meet today. Amen

Our Comforter

March 11, 2014

Opening Hymns:
92 For the Beauty of the Earth
http://www.hymnsite.com/lyrics/umh092.sht

Scripture Reading:
Psalm 121

121:1 I lift up my eyes to the hills-- from where will my help come?

121:2 My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

121:3 He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber.

121:4 He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

121:5 The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is your shade at your right hand.

121:6 The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.

121:7 The LORD will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life.

121:8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in from this time on and forevermore.

Message:
The scripture lesson for today gives me an overwhelming sense of peace. When we remember who is in control of the world it can give us great comfort. I remember as a little girl being afraid to sleep at night sometimes. I would close my eyes and pretend that an angel was there protecting me, and wrapping me in its wings to keep me safe. That is how this scripture makes me feel today. The worries that I have fade away as I read these words. Financial fears, and job troubles seem so small when you think of the loving God who watches over and protects us.

Read the Psalm again, and reflect on where your help comes from. Let the peace these words can bring enter in. You are loved by the Lord, and though we will face times of trials, He is with us every step of the way. Rest on His promises. Feel His loving hand leading you. And feel His presence and the presence of angels watching over you.

Time of Prayer
Dear heavenly Father, thank You for loving us, and protecting us when life is hard or frightening. Help us feel Your presence with us now, and let us never forget that You love us. We praise You for all the works You have done for us, and for all the amazing things You have yet to do. Amen

Faith Through all of Your Challenges

March 10, 2014
Opening Hymns:
398 Jesus Calls Us
http://www.hymnsite.com/lyrics/umh398.sht

Scripture Reading:
Genesis 12:1-4a

12:1 Now the LORD said to Abram, "Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you.

12:2 I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.

12:3 I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed."

12:4a So Abram went, as the LORD had told him; and Lot went with him.

Message:
When I read the bible sometimes it’s hard to remember that the people we read about don’t know how their story is going to end. Imagine how it must have felt for Abram in his old age to be told to leave his family, and go to a different land. Imagine how impossible it would seem to him that he would be the father of a great nation, when he and his wife were old and without offspring.

It takes a great act of faith to listen to God and follow His path when you don’t really know where the path is headed. But as we read the bible we can see how miraculous God’s plans are. God always comes through! Abram will have his name changed to Abraham and he will have a son with his wife. Abram listened to God’s call, and his prayers were answered.

What challenging things does God call you to face? Getting through college was one of the harder things I ever went through. I remember not sleeping much at all because I worked so hard on my studies, and yet I would still find time to read my bible and pray. I clung to God during that time knowing that with God all things are possible, and He would guide me through. Looking back, my relationship with God was the strongest it had ever been. It was so rewarding to make it through fully relying on God. If I hadn’t faced all those challenges, then I wouldn’t have drawn so close to God.

Time of Prayer
Dear Lord, during our times of trials, let us draw ever close to You, knowing that You love us. You know how the story ends, give us faith to trust and follow you, though the road be hard. Amen.

Repent and Forgive

March 9, 2014
Opening Hymns:
496 Sweet Hour of Prayer
http://www.hymnsite.com/lyrics/umh496.sht

Scripture Reading:
Psalm 32

32:1 Happy are those whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.

32:2 Happy are those to whom the LORD imputes no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit.

32:3 While I kept silence, my body wasted away through my groaning all day long.

32:4 For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. Selah

32:5 Then I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not hide my iniquity; I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the LORD," and you forgave the guilt of my sin. Selah

32:6 Therefore let all who are faithful offer prayer to you; at a time of distress, the rush of mighty waters shall not reach them.

32:7 You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with glad cries of deliverance. Selah

32:8 I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.

32:9 Do not be like a horse or a mule, without understanding, whose temper must be curbed with bit and bridle, else it will not stay near you.

32:10 Many are the torments of the wicked, but steadfast love surrounds those who trust in the LORD.

32:11 Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, O righteous, and shout for joy, all you upright in heart.

Message:
Have you ever done something that made you feel guilty. Maybe it was cheating on a test, or telling a lie. We all sin, and we know how it feels when we’ve done something wrong, and haven’t apologized for it. It can be such a release to say “I’m sorry” and to hear the words, “I forgive you” or “it’s alright”. The tension we feel before that can sometimes be unbearable. Afterwards you can almost feel the weight get lifted right off your shoulders.

In today’s scripture the writer talks about the joy he feels when he confesses his sins to God. Our God is a forgiving God, and through Jesus Christ all of our sins are forgiven. We no longer have to feel afraid to let God know that we did something wrong, and that we are sorry. He is always there to forgive and accept us. The hardest thing I’ve found is in accepting his forgiveness. Sometimes we can feel so bad that we don’t forgive ourselves, but turn to the scriptures, and let them reassure you “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life” (John 3:16).

Time of Prayer
Dear Lord, thank you for forgiving us. Please be with us during all of our trials. Remind us to forgive others, and to forgive ourselves as You forgive those who call to you. Amen

The Sinner and the Savior

March 8, 2014
Opening Hymns:
399 Take My Life and Let it Be
http://www.hymnsite.com/lyrics/umh399.sht

Scripture Reading:
Romans 5:12-19

5:12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death came through sin, and so death spread to all because all have sinned-

5:13 sin was indeed in the world before the law, but sin is not reckoned when there is no law.

5:14 Yet death exercised dominion from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sins were not like the transgression of Adam, who is a type of the one who was to come.

5:15 But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died through the one man's trespass, much more surely have the grace of God and the free gift in the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abounded for the many.

5:16 And the free gift is not like the effect of the one man's sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brings justification.

5:17 If, because of the one man's trespass, death exercised dominion through that one, much more surely will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness exercise dominion in life through the one man, Jesus Christ.

5:18 Therefore just as one man's trespass led to condemnation for all, so one man's act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all.

5:19 For just as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous.

Message:
The scripture reading for today connects the past two scriptures that we read. It gives of summary of what Adam’s sin brought the world, and what Jesus’ righteousness brought the world in return.

Adam’s sin is like a contagious plague infecting all mankind. He and Eve are thrown out of the garden, and God becomes more distant throughout the rest of the Old Testament. No longer do we hear how God is walking on earth, as he had walked in the garden. He speaks to those who He sees are righteous. He reveals Himself in miraculous wonders, and Moses is even able to see God's back (Exodus 33:22-23)… For most people, however, there is a great separation from God. That is, until Jesus Christ, the Son of God comes to earth to teach, heal, and save us.

Jesus’ sacrifice blots out our transgressions, and cures the disease of sin. We no longer need to feel that separation from God. The little girl in me wonders why we can’t just go back to the Garden of Eve. If Jesus’ obedience makes sinners righteous, then shouldn’t the story be done? Haven’t we reached that happy ending? No, there is still more work to do, and there are still more wounds that need to be healed.

Though we are forgiven, sin is still a part of all of our lives. There are so many heartbreaking things going on in the world. Wars still continue. People continue to starve. Through all the chaos that life can bring we must stand strong, and bring our own light to this broken world. We have lessons of our own to learn, and we also have lessons to teach and share with others. Lessons of love, strength, and forgiveness. We need to act on what Jesus taught us, and share what we’ve learned.

Time of Prayer
Dear Lord, thank You so much for Jesus’ sacrifice, and the forgiveness of our sins. Help us now to share the love that You’ve given us with others, that we may help heal this broken world. Amen

4:1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

4:2 He fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was famished.

4:3 The tempter came and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread."

4:4 But he answered, "It is written, 'One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"

4:5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple,

4:6 saying to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written, 'He will command his angels concerning you,' and 'On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.'"

4:7 Jesus said to him, "Again it is written, 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'"

4:8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor;

4:9 and he said to him, "All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me."

4:10 Jesus said to him, "Away with you, Satan! for it is written, 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.'"

4:11 Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels came and waited on him.

Message:
Remember the scripture from yesterday? Today’s temptation is in a very different climate, and under different circumstances. Instead of a garden full of fruit with every need met, Jesus is tempted in a desert where he had been fasting for 40 days and nights. In many ways, these stories are opposites of each other. In Genesis we see sin entering into the world through temptation, and in Mathew 4 we see the Savior of the world overcoming temptations.

These big contrasts show us our own weaknesses and God’s own strength. However, today’s scripture can give us hope. Jesus not only overcomes temptation, but He demonstrates to us how we can overcome temptation as well. We can call on the scriptures to guide our path whenever we feel lead astray. We can look back on this scripture and remind ourselves that it is possible to overcome our temptations.

Whether you’re in a garden, or in the desert of your life, temptations can be hard. But the good news is: They can be defeated! And even when we do fall short, Jesus paid the price for our sin and forgives us. Our struggles and temptations will eventually fade away, but Jesus will reign forever, and with Him we too can have eternal life.

Time of Prayer
Dear Lord, thank You for giving us these beautiful scriptures so that we can better follow Your path. Help guide us through each struggle that we face, and help us through all of our temptations. Thank you for loving us even when we fall short. Thank You for giving Your Son to die on the cross for us, so that we can have eternal life with You. Amen.
