Opening Hymns:
Surely the Presence of the Lord Is in This Place (Red Praise Book 285)
We Bring the Sacrifice of Praise (Red Praise Book 235)

Scripture Reading:
Psalm 22:23-26

Message: Trials
Today’s Psalm is a Psalm of praise to the Lord from the suffering. While many of us might not experience the suffering that David has gone through, we can still relate to this psalm. If there has been any trial or struggle that you have gone through in your life, and the Lord lead you through it… this Psalm applies. If you see others suffer and help to ease their suffering with the Lord’s guidance, this Psalm can speak to you.

It is no shock to me that this Psalm goes from great suffering to great joy and praise. I feel that those who suffer have the most to be joyful about when the suffering is over. There is a comedian named Eddie Izzard who somewhat touches on this topic. During one of his performances he speaks of the music in the various churches. He makes the joke that in the Anglican churches (who have not suffered too much) the music is often slow and boring… while in the African-American churches their Gospel music is the most joyful of all and they had been through the struggles with slavery.

I’m sure that you have noticed as well the joy that come through perseverance. One who struggles to get their diploma has more joy during their graduation, those who struggle with death have more joy when they overcome sickness and live. This Psalm is a beautiful reminder that we should praise God not only when times are good for us, but during our struggles.

Time of Prayer
Dear Lord, thank you for leading us through each trial that we face. May each trial cause us to be stronger and closer to You. Let us look back at our struggles with joy, as You have lead us, or are leading us through each one. Amen

The Lord’s Prayer

Closing Hymn
Rock of My Salvation (Red Praise Book 213)

May the Lord bless you and keep you: May the Lord make His face shine upon you, and be gracious unto you: May the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace." Amen.

Go in peace, serve the Lord
Thanks be to God
