Opening Hymns:
Open My Eyes that I May See (Red Hymnal 454)

Scripture Reading:
John 12:1-11

Message: Gifts of Love
Judas makes a good point in this scripture message. If he wasn’t saying it so he could have money, there are many people that could be helped with the money from the perfume. Many people who were hungry could be fed. As a child it was hard for me to understand why Mary did what she did. Jesus’ explanation makes sense… except, does Mary know that He was going to die soon? The disciples didn’t seem to understand that Jesus was going to die; even when Jesus told them right up front. How does Mary know? Why does she bathe His feet in perfume?

In John chapter 11 Jesus had raised Lazarus from the dead. Mary and Martha were in awe at the miracle, and grateful to have Lazarus back. Mary may not have even known that what she was doing was significant at all. It may be a gift given to Him to show her gratitude for saving her brother. Perhaps she is recognizing that He is the Son of God. Regardless of why she did it, it was something significant that falls into God’s plan

Some days we may feel the urge to do something nice for others. Maybe it is volunteering in our community, donating to the food pantry or simply paying for a person’s drive through meal. When we do such selfless acts, we may never know the full impact they will have on other people. Just as Mary may not have fully known.

Time of Prayer
Dear Lord; let us all reach out to our neighbors in need through our prayers, our gifts, and our service. Forgive us when we fall short of Your plan. Help guide us to do Your will. Show us how to serve, and teach us how to love. Let those who we reach out to feel Your loving presence. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Closing Hymn
Breathe on me Breath of God (Red Hymnal 420)

May the Lord bless you and keep you: May the Lord make His face shine upon you, and be gracious unto you: May the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace." Amen.

Go in peace, serve the Lord
Thanks be to God
