¹⁵ God also said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah. ¹⁶ I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.”

Message:
I’m really bad at remembering names… no, I mean really bad! I’ve often been too embarrassed to admit it from time to time, and find myself avoiding using names frequently, just in case I get a name wrong. It becomes so confusing when people get married, and their name is now completely different.

Whether you are good or bad at remembering names, there are occasions when names will change. Names can have great meaning. When people get married often times the bride changes her last name to her husband’s name. This symbolizes their joining as one family.

In the scripture today we read of a different kind of name change, and a different kind of commitment. God has made a covenant with Abram, and has promised to make him the father of many nations. Abram’s name is changed to Abraham which means “father of many.” Though Abraham doubts at first, he puts his faith in God, and follows His commands. God keeps His promise through the covenant He made.

God has made a promise with us too. God has promised us forgiveness of all our sins, through Jesus’ love and sacrifice. We needn’t change our names in this covenant. However, other things in our life change. When we truly love and seek God, and follow Jesus we will find ourselves acting as servants to others. We can find ourselves caring and seeking to do good for others in our world, and sharing God’s love.    

Time of Prayer
Lord, thank you for changing our lives and our hearts so that we can go out in the world serving You. Thank You for the love you have shown us. Please, let us always remember to share this love with all those we meet. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

A Saving Love

1 Peter 3:18-22

In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, ²¹ and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God.^[b] It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, ²² who has gone into heaven and is at God’s right hand—with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.

Message:
The scripture in 1 Peter ties everything together. It reminds us of the flood that took place, and the ark that had saved Noah and his family… and it shows us how many more are saved through Jesus Christ. I remember having a hard time with Noah’s story. The God that I know is all powerful, yet all loving. It’s hard to picture our God wiping out nearly everything, and saving so few.

Sometimes I’ve pondered why God was so harsh in the earlier days. Why are there so many stories of death and destruction in the Old Testament? Why couldn’t Jesus come right away? Please don’t get me wrong, I enjoy reading the Old Testament. I’m familiar with many of the stories, and enjoy the lessons that we learn... When you’re having a bad day, or you feel guilty for a sin, the Old Testament can be a good place to feel a little bit better. One can think “at least my life isn’t as bad as Job’s”, or, “at least I didn’t sell my brother to Ishmaelite’s”.

 

Okay, so the Old Testament is for more than just feeling better about yourself. Those scriptures provide us with a deeper understanding of who God is, and a clearer idea of how great of a sacrifice Jesus made. When I read the Old Testament and hear about entire villages destroyed, I remember how blest we are to have our Savior who died to blot out our transgressions. When I read Noah’s story, I’m grateful, not only that God promised not to flood the world again, but also that He has now truly saved it.

Time of Prayer
Dear Lord, thank You for saving us from our sins. Let us remember Jesus’ sacrifice and love as we go out into the world. Let us always remember to share His love with others. Amen

New Covenant

⁸ Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him: ⁹ “I now establish my covenant with you and with your descendants after you ¹⁰ and with every living creature that was with you—the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you—every living creature on earth. ¹¹ I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.”

¹² And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: ¹³ I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. ¹⁴ Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, ¹⁵ I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. ¹⁷ So God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant I have established between me and all life on the earth.”

Message:
Whenever I see a rainbow I think and remember the story of Noah. When I think of this covenant, I can’t help but think of the covenants that come after. God’s covenant with Abraham (Genesis 15). As well as the new covenant that Jesus has made with all of us during the last supper (Matthew 26:26-30).

Just as the rainbow is there to remind us of God’s promise not to flood the world, the wine and bread are there for us to remind us of Jesus’ love and sacrifice. Each time we partake of communion we can remember that God loves us, and has made a promise to forgive us of our transgressions.

Sometimes it can be hard to feel or recognize the forgiveness that the Lord gives us. All of us have sinned, and all of us need the forgiveness that the Lord offers. Re-reading the “Institution of the Lord’s Supper” in Matthew can give some reassurance. I’ve probably heard the “Lord’s Supper” recited more than any other scripture. Nearly every Sunday they recite the scripture as communion is being prepared. However, like so many things in life we can forget the meaning behind the words.

As we reflect on God’s covenant with Noah, let us read the new covenant that Jesus makes with each of us:

Matthew 26:26-30:

²⁶ While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”

²⁷ Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. ²⁸ This is my blood of the^[a] covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. ²⁹ I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”

Time of Prayer
Dear Lord, the forgiveness that You have given to each of us is far more than we deserve. Yet, let us remember that we are loved by You. Help us to share the love You have given us with one another. Thank You for making a new covenant, that we may be forgiven. Amen.

True Fasting

Message:
This is the perfect scripture to start out the Lenten season. It reminds us what is truly important. This scripture talks of a people who know the act of fasting, but have forgotten the purpose. They are bowing their heads, yet continuing to act unjustly. They are praying for the Lord’s help, but not recognizing the help others need from them.  

During the Lenten season it is good for us to reflect on our own lives. In the business of everything, have we just been going through the motions? Have we forgotten the meaning of a fast, the reason we go to church, or the reason we pray? Do our actions reflect the love of God? Are we answering God’s call?

This season of Lent, be fully present at church, and in prayer. Remember the kind of fast that the Lord calls us to. One of service, justice, sharing, and love.  

Time of Prayer
Dear Lord, be with each of us during this season of Lent. Help us focus our minds and hearts on You. Forgive us when we go astray. Lead us back to a life serving You. Let us be a servant to others. Amen

Here I Am

² At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim, so that he could not see, was lying down in his own place; ³ the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down within the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was. ⁴ Then the Lord called, “Samuel! Samuel!”^[a] and he said, “Here I am!” ⁵ and ran to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call; lie down again.” So he went and lay down. ⁶ And the Lord called again, “Samuel!” and Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call, my son; lie down again.” ⁷ Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. ⁸ And the Lord called Samuel again the third time. ¹⁰ And the Lord came and stood forth, calling as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for thy servant hears.” ¹¹ Then the Lord said to Samuel, “Behold, I am about to do a thing in Israel, at which the two ears of every one that hears it will tingle.


Message:

Are we listening? Are we ready to answer the Lord and call out “here I am”? Samuel was called by the Lord when he was just a boy, and his first task was not easy. Right away he is called to tell someone he loves of God’s punishment to come. Eli has allowed his sons to sin and eat the offerings meant for the Lord. While this message was a hard one to relay, Eli took it very well, better than others Samuel would prophesy to.

It is hard to stand up for the Lord’s justice. I can’t imagine how hard it was to be a prophet. Rare are the messages of “keep up the good work”. Instead, prophets are called to correct and straighten the paths of the corrupt. I’m not sure that Samuel, as a young boy, fully understood what he was getting into when he said “speak Lord, for Your servant is listening.”

Other prophets seem to recognize how hard of a path they are being lead down. Moses begged the Lord to find someone else to fulfill his task (Exodus 3:11) While others are excited to be called, and are overly confident that they will never stray from God. Even though Jesus foretold that Peter would deny him, Peter was convinced that he would never stray from the Lord (Mark 14:26-31).

Where do you find yourself in your relationship with God? Are you hearing God calling out to you? Are you answering “here I am”? Are you asking God to find another to fill His call? Or have you recently discovered how hard your calling is?

Regardless of where you are at, the bible offers comfort, God is with each of us, He provides courage and strength for those who are overwhelmed with the path ahead of them, and He offers forgiveness for those who have fallen short. After Peter denies Jesus, Jesus returns, and forgives Peter. Peter had denied Jesus 3 times, but Jesus lets Peter profess his love for Jesus 3 times. (John 21:15-19)

Recently, I’ve found myself recognizing that the challenges ahead of me are harder than I thought. The young girl all wide eyed and excited has been replaced by an adult who finds more doubts and concerns than hope and faith. Nothing seems impossible when you’re a young child, mountains could move, and the world can be changed. As we grow older we face challenges, and are not always able to over come them.

Even though WE cannot overcome, it does not mean the Lord cannot overcome. No matter how far off the path, the Lord offers forgiveness. No matter how hard the challenge, the Lord offers strength.


Time of Prayer
Dear Lord be with all of those who need strength, healing and forgiveness. Guide Your children down Your path so that we can serve and do Your will. Forgive us when we fall short, help us when we are not strong enough, and bring us back to Your path when we wander off of it. Amen

Message:
2014 has come and gone, and the year 2015 has greeted us. The New Year has often been a time to reflect on our past year, and look forward to the next year. Many people make New Year’s Resolutions, and look forward to the changes that can be made in the year to come. 

The scripture reading for today has helped me reflect on different ways I can strengthen and grow in my relationship with God. None of us are perfect, we have all fallen short of what God asks of us. I know that I am no different, but that means that we can each strive to grow, and improve from one day to the next. There will always be room to make a new, New Year’s resolution. 

Ecclesiastes 3:1-13 is a scripture that both gives me a sense of peace and despair. It calls us to accept things as they happen in their time. There is a time for us to laugh and a time to morn. I love this passage, and always have, but often find myself not accepting it as it becomes a reality in my life. I don’t want to have the time to hate, or the time to morn. It can be so hard when it’s someone’s time to die! Accepting things when they are out of our control is a challenge.

I remember as a child wishing I was older with more privaleges… and in recent years have found myself yearning to be younger once more. Sometimes when we reject the season that we are in, it prevents us from enjoying the beauty that is around us in the here and now. This scripture helps us find peace in the things that only God can control. We cannot choose when to reap from our gardens, but must wait for the season.

As I look forward to the new year that awaits me, I’m striving to be better at accepting the things that are out of my control… and to recognize the things that I can change. I strongly believe that in every season of our lives, both good and bad, that God is always with us. Guiding us, watching over us, and leading us. We can’t always change what is going on in our lives, but we can always hold out our hand to God who will give us the strength to get through everything.

Time of Prayer
Dear Lord, let us call on You when we are in the tough seasons of our lives. Let us rejoice in You when our hearts are filled with joy, and let us cry to You when we experience loss. Guide us, protect us, love us, and lead us. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Love the "you" you Hide

Romans 6:1b-11
6:1b Should we continue in sin in order that grace may abound?

6:2 By no means! How can we who died to sin go on living in it?

6:3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?

6:4 Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in the newness of life.

6:5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.

6:6 We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin.

6:7 For whoever has died is freed from sin.

6:8 But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.

6:9 We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him.

6:10 The death he died, he died to sin, once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.

6:11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Message:
As I read this scripture today, something seems new about it. I’ve read this scripture before… but in a different way. I use to read this scripture in a scolding way. The message I got from it was “aren’t you supposed to be dead from sin? Why are you still sinning then?! Try harder, and don’t sin”. However, today the scripture seems more comforting and loving. While this scripture is most certainly telling us not to sin, I also feeling it call us to accept forgiveness for past sins.

If the devil is there plotting against Christians, I think one of the prime tools he would use is guilt. When we feel like we are sinful and do not forgive ourselves, we can start to believe that we aren’t worthy of God’s grace. We can give up. I’ve seen too many people put themselves down because of things they’ve done in the past. Their guilt and regret holds them from seeing the beautiful and wonderful person that they are.

This past Sunday I was singing the hymn “Will You Come and Follow Me”. I know that I’ve sung this Hymn before, but never have the words impacted me as much as they did on Sunday. When we got to the fourth verse I found I was so moved by it that I couldn’t sing… “Will you love the ‘you’ you hide if I but call your name? will you quell the fear inside and never be the same? Will you use the faith you’ve found to reshape the world around, through my sight and touch and sound in you and you in me?”

 

Imagine how life changing it can be to embrace the wonderful and beautiful “you” that’s inside! There is so much more that you can do for the world when you recognize the fact that you are a child of God who is forgiven and free.  

Time of Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for giving each of us forgiveness. Let us go forth today into this world to share the love that You have given us with everyone we meet. Guide us with Your grace, and fill us with Your peace, in Jesus name we pray. Amen.
