Scripture Reading:
Romans 5:6-12
Message:Reconciliation
I am amazed by God’s love. The scripture states “God Demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). Sin is a very broad category of wrong doings, and regardless of what we have done it doesn’t change the fact that God loves us and Christ died for us. No matter the sin, God is seeking us out. We cannot be saved any more than we already have been. Jesus has fully saved us with the ultimate sacrifice of His life.
“We also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation” (Romans 5:11). What does it mean to receive reconciliation? According to Dictionary.com Reconcile historically means “To make good again, repair.” I love how well this definition fits with the scripture. We have been made good again through Jesus Christ. God repairs our hearts. Like a potter he is repairing us and making us new.
Time of Prayer
Dear Lord, thank you for saving us, and thank you for giving us reconciliation. It is a blessing to be Your child. Help make us “good again”, and “repair” our hearts that we might love and serve you. Amen.

Scripture Reading:
Romans 5:1-5
Message:
Paul seems to have an up beat attitude in this scripture. He is talking about the good that can come from suffering. I have had times in my life that were unpleasant. At times I would beg for my burdens to be taken away… but looking back on my life I don’t think any single moment could count as “suffering” under Paul’s definition. He had been thrown in prison, his life had been threatened, and it seemed every where he went he suffered for God, and in order to spread God’s message. It is through his suffering that he writes these verses showing that in the end suffering creates hope
I don’t think I have had any suffering. However, if there comes a time that I will suffer, I hope that I will be able to remember this verse and rejoice and praise God for the perseverance, character, and hope that will be created through the suffering.
Time of Prayer
Dear Lord, be with us through our sufferings, and help us to remember Your loving presence with us. Teach us to rejoice in our sufferings, and give us the hope that can withstand any trial. Amen

Psalm 95
Message:
I just love the Lectionary because at times it brings scriptures together that complement each other and add to the meaning and the message behind it. Today we read one of the psalms that discusses the situation mentioned in yesterdays scripture. First this scripture is talking about worshiping our God. It is a praise psalm. Then it specifically mentions the situation in Meribah. The psalmist’s shifts from talking as people praising the Lord, and speaks the Lord’s thoughts on that situation.
In a way this scripture is another do’s and don’ts lesson. We start first with the do part. Praise the Lord, be thankful, lift and exult God. Then we move to the don’ts. Mainly… don’t do what they did. Don’t let your hearts go away, don’t test God, and don’t harden your hearts. With such do’s and don’ts lessons we have a much clearer vision of what God intends us to be, and how we can best be His children.
Time of Prayer
Lord, thank You for the scriptures that show us both how to be Your children and how not to be Your children. Help guide us each day that we might understand you more and more. Amen.

We have Come into His House
Let the Walls Fall Down
Scripture Reading:
Exodus 17: 1-7
Message:
The Israelites have first hand seen the work of the Lord. They saw the miracles that enabled them to leave Egypt, and they saw Moses glowing after talking with the Lord. However, that does not prevent then from having doubt in their hearts. When times get hard instead of praying and trusting the Lord they complain, gripe and question whether or not he even exists. Even in the midst of their complaining the Lord provides for their needs.
We should remember this too. Life will not always be easy. Loved ones may die, we could lose our jobs, and we may get a bad diagnosis… when we are in both the good times and that bad we have a decision to make whether we are conscious about the decision or not. Do we trust the Lord and rest our cares on him, or do we question whether he exists or not. In my experience the people in difficult times who trust in the Lord have a certain peace about them. Whether they are near the end of their life, or have lost someone they care about… they are accepting of it, and take comfort in the presence of the Lord.
Time of Prayer
Dear Lord, sometimes this life that You have given us is hard. I pray that when life gets hard that we put all our trust in You. Guide us, comfort us, and protect us. Let us seek You no matter what happens. Thank You Lord for Your never failing love. Amen

As We Gather Red 16
As The Deer Red 28
Scripture Reading: John 3: 1-21
Message:
Since I became a nurse I have learned more and more about our own mortality. Sometimes people come to the ER with no hope of recovery. Often that is when families surround them the pastor comes and prays over them and there is mourning and recounted stories. This is often the moment when people wonder exactly what happens when someone passes away. I think this has been a question that has been asked for hundreds of generations. Where do we go when we die… or, how do we or our relatives enter into heaven.
This scripture lays it out simply. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life” (John 3:16). The ultimate gift was God’s sacrifice. We are forgiven and as long as there is belief in our hearts and not doubt then we can be with our God that we trust and love. We needn’t add any more complexities to the simple truth that Jesus spoke of. At times people may think that condemnation will come if certain things are done or are not done… However even the prophets could not condemn demons to hell, how then can a man condemn another man to hell for things he has or has not done? That is why Christ’s sacrifice is such a blessed gift. There is no price we must pay other than the true belief and faith in our God.
Time of Prayer
Dear Lord, thank you for comforting us with such beautiful words from scripture today. Let us not live in fear about things to come, but live in confidence in You. Thank you for Your sacrifice of Your son, and thank You for the gift of life and a close relationship with You. It is truly our most precious gift. Be with us when we morn for those who have passed on. Be with family and friends of persons who have died, and guide them through the time of mourning. Amen

Opening Hymns:
Great is Thy Faithfulness B/B 73
Let the River Flow B/B 143
Scripture Reading:
Romans 4:13-17
Message: Define Faith
What does it mean to have faith? What does it mean to be faithful? While the words are simple enough at times it can be difficult to find and grasp their meaning. There are many different definitions of faith, and just as many different interpretations of what it means for us to live faithfully. At dictionary.com faith is defined as “confidence or trust in a person or thing” and “belief that is not based on proof.” However, scripture goes beyond the trust definition. In the scriptures we learn how important it is to have faith, and actions with it.
James 2:19-24 states: “19 You believe that God is one. You do well. The demons also believe, and shudder. 20 But do you want to know, vain man, that faith apart from works is dead? 21 Wasn’t Abraham our father justified by works, in that he offered up Isaac his son on the altar? 22 You see that faith worked with his works, and by works faith was perfected; 23 and the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him as righteousness;” and he was called the friend of God. 24 You see then that by works, a man is justified, and not only by faith.”
While at a first glance it may seem as though the scripture lesson for today and the last posting contradict this scripture, I see them as complementing one another. Works alone cannot earn us salvation. However, “Faith apart from works is dead” (James 2:20). Faith is alive when we act on it. When we not only trust and believe God, but also follow Him and His path set before us. When we reach out a hand to those in need; when we pray and actively talk to God, and when we give up our own desires for God’s plan and others… that is when faith is alive. If I was to define faith I would say it is “Confidently believing, trusting, and acting on that belief/trust.” Let us go out on this day with complete faith in God… Fully believing and actively following God’s call.
Time of Prayer
Dear Lord, thank You when You lead us. Let us not only believe in You, but also act on that belief with our words, actions, thoughts, and deeds. Guide us on this day that we may never forget You, and Your active faith and care for us. Amen.

My Faith Looks Up to Thee 162
Scripture Reading: Romans 4: 1-5
Message: Grace Alone
We can not earn our own salvation. If we could earn our way by works what would Christ’s sacrifice be to us? What would be the point of such a selfless sacrifice? Also, we cannot shame ourselves out of salvation. Christ’s love and sacrifice washed ALL our sins away… not just the moderately bad ones… all of them. But in order to be given this gift of salvation that God has offered us, we must accept it.
Romans 3: 23-24: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” We are all sinners, each in our own way. Therefore we should not judge and look down on others because of their sins. A prayer that I learned from the book “Crucial Conversations” goes something like this: “Lord, help me forgive those who sin differently than I do.” I really enjoy that prayer. It shows us that we can be quick to point out to others what there doing wrong, and miss our wrongs in a different area in our life. That is why we must remember that all sins are forgiven. Everyone’s… We should not judge, and we cannot condemn, because the Lord offers the gift of salvation to us all.
This does not mean that our actions don’t matter. Rather, because we have received this most precious gift from God we should try to follow His lead. We can help others do this as well in a non-judging way. We can try to lead by example; we can have bible studies together so we better understand scripture. We can show others a better life than drugs, violence, and sex. Out of love we can raise our children to know good from bad. What would the Lord rather have us do than live out His message each day? We are forgiven. Every sin, and every one of us. The gift and the sacrifice have been given. Let us praise the Lord, and let us spread the good news.

Message: My Greatest Friend
What a comforting scripture. I’ve had a number of nights where I toss and turn and am unable to sleep. Stressors hit me at every turn, and anxiety can prevent my eyes from closing. How comforting then to know that while I’m awake, God is awake as well. He watches over each of us always. When we are crying or hurt, His presence is there to comfort. When we have reached a goal, he is there to rejoice with us. God is our help. It is comforting to know that when it seems as though there is no one to turn to, and no one we can call during the night… we can always call on the Lord. He will answer with his loving presence even though we might not hear or see it.
One of my favorite poems is “footprints” by Mary Stevenson. It is a touching poem that illustrates God’s presence with us during the difficult times in our lives. At times this thought is what keeps me going through the trials and struggles that life brings. Somehow, each time I am able to make it through. Each time God is with us, and when we need Him, He will carry us.
Time of Prayer
Lord thank you for being with us both in the good times and the bad. Protect us today, and watch over us as we face the challenges in life. Comfort us when we are sad. Be with us on sleepless nights. Shield us from our enemies. Give us strength and courage that we may bravely go out and fulfill Your will. Amen

Genesis 12: 1-4a
Message: Following the Leader
Can you imagine being in Abram’s shoes. He is a 74 year old man who has been promised amazing things. The Lord will make Abram into “a great nation” and he will be “blessed” along with those who bless him. How much faith would it take someone to believe these words being said to them at such a rich old age? How much faith would it take someone to act on such a vision? Quite a lot
Sometimes God’s plans are not the same as our plans. At times we are able to visualize our own lives playing out before it ever happens. When we are younger we can look up to people ahead of us in age and see that ‘first I will go to elementary school, then middle school… then high school and then College! After that I want to be _________. I will raise a family…. And so on. However, sometimes our plans are not God’s plans. I’m sure Abram wasn’t thinking that he would live a long life, and then at the age of 75 I will leave my country and my people at that point and go from there. Unexpected circumstances happen, and when we hear the voice of our Lord guiding us, the best thing we can do is follow. Life is so much more interesting and fulfilling when we stop following our plan, and begin to follow God’s.
Time of Prayer
Dear Lord, please lead us to Your will in this day. Guide us as we seek You, and find us when we are lost. Forgive us when we wonder from Your path. Rejoice with us when we are able to follow step by step. Amen

Amen
The Lord’s Prayer

Scripture Reading:
Mathew 4: 1-7
Message: WE Can
This is one of my favorite scriptures. It is one of the scriptures that helps us relate to Jesus. He was tempted. We each have temptations in our lives. Some more pressing and more powerful than others. For some it could be smoking or drinking, for others it could be excessive eating and watching TV. Sometimes we may not even know that a temptation is there. But regardless of the temptation, no matter how pressing we can always resist.
In this scripture Jesus is fasting in the desert and is tempted by the devil three times. Jesus is in a weak state at this time as he had been fasting for forty days and nights. He is able to deny his bodily desire for food. He is able to deny his own glorification by not doing miraculous works solely for himself. Finally he is able to turn down the temptation of the entire world. For us he traded self glorification for humbleness. He showed us how life is to be lead. He showed us that with God’s help we can fight our own temptations too.
Scripture can be our guide to following the right path. If we ever feel any temptation we can start with the basic truths of scripture such as “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” (Luke 6:31) and “your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God...” (1 Corinthians 6:19) and “love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind and love your neighbor as yourself” (Luke 10:27). Jesus has shown us the way to live, all we need to do now is follow.
Time of Prayer
Dear Lord, help us to follow your example. Lead us to do your will each and ever day. Amen

It’s Time to Praise the Lord Red 125

Scripture Reading:
Romans Joel 2: 1-2, 12-17
Message: Praise the Lord
Often in the Old Testament there are times of repentance and fasting. The prophets tell the people to turn from their ways that God might forgive them. As we enter into the Lenten season we too go into a time of fasting and reflection. It is a time to reflect on the sacrifice that our God made for us. During the time of the Old Testament they were in fear for their physical lives if they sinned. There are many stories in which people and nations were brought down, destroyed, and put into slavery because they had turned from God.
However, because of this sacrifice we needn’t fear. God has forgiven us of all our sins. We can take comfort that our God is a forgiving and loving God. Thus we have a lot to praise God about, and we have a lot that we can pray about and contemplate during this season of lent. For while we were sinners Christ died for us. We are forgiven. Christ paid the price. Thanks Be to God.
Time of Prayer
Lord, thank you for keeping our souls safe by Your holy sacrifice. Thank You for the love that you have given to each of us. As we enter into a time of fasting let us humble ourselves and focus our minds on You and the wonders that Christ has done for us. Thank you for the sacrifice, and thank you for the forgiveness. Amen

Opening Hymns:
We are Marching in the Light of God B/B 232
Come, Thou Fount B/B 37
Scripture Reading:
Romans 5 12-19
Message:
“For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous” (Romans 5:19). This last verse seems to sum up the scripture reading for today. This scripture shows both ends of the story (the bible). Our Old Testament begins with Adam and Eve and their sin. Here at last we come to the end of the story. God triumphs over sin. Our sin is forgiven and we are called “righteous.”
What a beautiful thought, and such a beautiful word “righteous.” It is touching to me that my creator would chose to call his children… and call me… “righteous” Far too often I don’t feel like I live up to the name. I complain about work, and about how other people have done me wrong. When I know somewhere out there people are working a lot longer and harder than me… and there are others that I have done wrong to. However, this heavenly forgiveness is a gift to all. Sin has been defeated, and God’s forgiveness is the victor.
We can then, go out into the world and try again. We know the sins we’ve committed, we know the wrongs that we’ve done… But we are washed clean. Knowing our mistakes can help us do better when we try again. This does not mean that we should go out and do whatever we want because we will be forgiven anyway. Instead let us be conscious of what God’s will is and seek a closer relationship. After all He has given us everything: The earth, plants, friends, family, and above all forgiveness.
Time of Prayer
Dear Lord, thank You for Your gift of Jesus Christ. Thank you for His sacrifice, that we might be forgiven. As we enter into Lent let us not forget all that You have done for us. Thank you for everything. Amen
